As you can see in all the pictures, the influence of the Hindu tradition was strong. The script is similar to Sanscript |
The area around Da Nang was the location of one of the oldest kingdoms in Vietnam around the 9th century. The Champa people who settled here were from Java with a strong connection to the Hindu/Buddhist culture of India. The kingdom was constantly besieged by invaders from the north and from the west.
They were finally defeated by the Nguyen kings from above the mountain range or the Cloudy Pass. The mountains had protected the Champa for centuries, but in their weakness, they were more vulnerable to the Nguyen. Today, only their sculptures have survived. Many of the sculptures were looted by the French in the 1800s - 1900s. These remaining sculptures are the only ones remaining.
After they were conquered, most Champa fled further south or west. One family of scuptors stayed in the area because there mountains of quartz, jade, and sandstone to be cut and shaped. Today the family is in the same place and has created a major business of exported scultures.
